Tracking your smile includes making sure that anytime you are suffering from issues associated with your oral health, you are being treated accordingly. The more you do to improve your smile and your oral health care, the better chance you have of reversing any issues. However, some conditions are simply unexplainable and can arise in even the healthiest of people. For example, oral and throat cancer is diagnosed in over 40,000 Americans every year, and it is common throughout all ages. The best prevention you can provide yourself is to always look for signs and symptoms that it may be occurring.

If you’re noticing visual abnormalities within your mouth or even in your head, neck or face areas, you’ll need to dive deeper to determine exactly what the cause of your problems are. If you continually have visual impairments within your mouth and further ailments and hindrances as well, it may be a sign of oral cancer. Common symptoms associated with oral cancer are as follows:

  • Oral cancer may produce irregularities with bumps, eroded patches, velvety white and speckled patches, swelling, thickenings and abnormal sores in your mouth that fail to go away or heal properly.

  • If you routinely have unexplained bleeding in your mouth, it could be a sign of oral cancer.

  • Extreme throat soreness and chronic sore throat are common symptoms of throat cancer.

  • If you’re having difficulties with any issues associated with your mouth including eating, speaking and swallowing, it could be the first sign that you’re suffering from oral or throat cancer.

Furthermore, if you have dramatic weight loss, are experiencing a change in the way your teeth or dentures fit together, have ear pains, headaches, or other signs of anything wrong within your head, neck or face area, visit your dentist for an oral cancer screening.
